Acknowledging the CMA Apology to Indigenous Peoples

September 18, 2024

Today, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) will issue an apology for its role and the role of the medical profession in the harms caused to Indigenous Peoples within the health system, both through action and inaction. This apology is a crucial step towards building trust with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities and organizations. It aims to inspire medical learners, physicians, and medical organizations to embark on their own reconciliation journeys, both professionally and personally.

Significance of the CMA’s Apology

The CMA’s apology is an important acknowledgment of the systemic discrimination and harms that Indigenous Peoples have faced within the healthcare system. By offering this apology, the CMA hopes to build trust and support with Indigenous communities and inspire a broader commitment to reconciliation within the medical profession.

Potential Need for Support 💌

We recognize that this apology may reopen wounds and retraumatize First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals, families, and communities who have experienced harms in the health system. It is essential to provide support to those affected, particularly the First Nations Mental Wellness Workforce, who may face unique challenges during this time. The acknowledgment of these harms can be triggering and cause a range of emotions, making it vital to have culturally safe support resources readily available.
