FPWC Offices Closed on September 30th for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

October 1, 2024

As we pause to reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, the First Peoples Wellness Circle (FPWC) reaffirms our commitment to wellness and our role in addressing the legacy of residential schools. This day is an annual reminder of the importance of advancing reconciliation and supporting mental wellness in Indigenous communities.

Our work aligns with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and we are deeply invested in seeing these calls fulfilled. Recognizing the trauma and intergenerational impacts of colonization and residential schools and the need for resources, we remain dedicated to creating resources and pathways to wholistic wellness based on Indigenous knowledge and culture. The TRC calls for an equitable healthcare system with increased attention and action to mental wellness and healing. In this way, FPWC’s purpose aligns directly – working towards mental wellness supports that understand, respect, and address the unique needs of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

On Monday, September 30th, our offices will be closed as we remember the children who never returned, the survivors, and their families. We encourage everyone to recognize and reflect on the significance of this day and join us in making a genuine commitment to change.

In line with our commitment to these Calls to Action, FPWC is pleased to announce the launch of the Indian Residential School Resolution Health Support Program (IRS RHSP): Formative Analysis. This report explores the capacity, priorities, and needs of the Resolution Health Support workforce, considering additional duties related to Indian Day School, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, the Sixties Scoop, the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

The Formative Analysis allows us to:

  • Share the important story and healing journey of the workforce and clients
  • Advocate for funding equity and program sustainability
  • Plan to address training needs
  • Answer the call for networking opportunities

We invite you to read the report and join us in our ongoing efforts to support Indigenous wellness and advance reconciliation.
