Memory Carriers: A Community Toolkit for Understanding Dementia and Supporting People with It

The Memory Carriers Toolkit was developed in response to what we have heard: there is a need for clear, culturally grounded resources that reflect both the realities of dementia and the strengths found within Indigenous cultures and communities.

The Memory Carriers Toolkit offers practical guidance and strategies for families, caregivers, community members, and frontline workers who are walking alongside a person living with dementia.

Bringing together Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, the Toolkit offers a balanced approach to dementia care. The Toolkit centres relationships, culture, and community, helping people stay connected to home, family, and Nation while supporting safety and quality of life. It aims to reduce stigma, strengthen caregiver confidence, and support care that is meaningful and rooted in community.

Who this Toolkit is for:

  • The Indigenous Mental Wellness Workforce (Indian Residential School Resolution Health Support Workers, Mental Wellness Teams, Crisis Response Teams, Community Wellness workers, and other trusted helpers)
  • Family members who are caregiving for or sharing life with someone living with dementia
  • Anyone providing support, whether through personal relationships or in a professional role
  • Elders and Knowledge Carriers who offer cultural and spiritual guidance in their communities

We invite you to explore the Toolkit, share it with your networks, and help make this resource available in community.
